August 1. Widor: Symphonie no. 10, "Romane," opus 73 The last organ symphony of Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937), composed in 1900, is based on two Easter chants. A delightfully disjunct half-hour of organ music! 6. August 15. Music about the Virgin Mary The image of Mary, the mother of Jesus, has inspired religious art for centuries. Hear what composers of the Baroque, Romantic, and Modern eras have done to translate their image of the Virgin to organ music. Get to know one of the most extraordinary women in history, and some of the art inspired by her image, on a day celebrated as one of her major festivals. 7. August 22. Bach for More: Chorale-based Works Many of Bach's deepest thoughts as a composer and as a human being were confided to the shorter works based on the classic Lutheran chorales.
