Monday, January 17, 2005:  Chapter Visit to Connecticut to see Appleton Organ, Odell Factory
On Monday, January 17, Martin Luther King Day, the Brooklyn Chapter went to central Connecticut for a truly memorable day.
We started out with a visit to an 1827 Appleton organ in Middle Haddam--an older brother, by three years, of the famous organ in the Metropolitan Museum of Art--in the Second Congregational Church.  In the late nineteenth century, Erben added a rather decidedly non-standard pedalboard to this utter gem of an early American pipe organ.  Larry Trupiano gave a great presentation on the organ, and Gregory Eaton and Jonathan Hall played repertoire on it for the chapter.
Lunch at a delightful lakeside restaurant followed, and then we visited the Odell factory in East Hampton.  Ed and Holly demonstrated all aspects of the organ builder's art, and provided a delicious dessert.  A few traffic jams slightly delayed our return, but we were home in Brooklyn a little after six PM.  What a terrific day!
