Community Church of Greenwood, July 11, 2008
Just adjacent to Indianapolis on the south-west, Greenwood, Indiana is the home of Thomas and Beth Wright and their church, the Community Church of Greenwood. Thomas, a former organ student of Jonathan Hall, is the new director of music of this large and growing church in the Evangelical tradition. Hall was invited to play one of his signature all-American recitals in the church's large Worship Center. The organ, a Rodgers 960, performed faultlessly and gave a very good account of itself. A large and friendly crowd turned out, largely church members but also full of good friends from Hall's Indiana days. There were church colleagues and members, other former students, and many very warm and welcoming folk who were delighted with the program.
Hall's program included his favorite composers, such as Calvin Hampton; as well as pieces by Charles Ives, John Zundel, Billy Strayhorn, and other Americans. Hall earned the Doctor of Music degree at IU Bloomington in 2001, and this was his first visit back to one of his many "home states." Especial thanks are due to his host and hostess, Tom and Beth, who over the years have become close friends, indeed a loving home back in Indiana. The two appeared on this recital program, playing part of the Sowerby Carillon on handbells. Here's to many more years of fruitful and happy ministry for them both!
