Bill Powers and Jonathan Hall were warmly welcomed and received gracious hospitality and sensitive musical appreciation on their recent visit to the East End of Long Island. Jonathan Hall lived in East Hampton from 1982 to 1984, and his grandparents lived in Water Mill for decades; his godmother still resides in Amagansett. He still cherishes the friendships he made during his tenure at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton. After this trip, he adds several new friendships to that list. Bill Powers, a newcomer to the Hamptons, looks forward to returning!
Their recital, on Saturday, August 20, was in the nave of Saint Ann's Episcopal Church, Bridgehampton, which is home to JH and CS Odell opus 644, a wonderful new three-manual organ from the Odell shop. Digital enhancements by Artisan are heard from the "west" door (which faces north, but who's arguing?)
Their recital included transcriptions of Dvorak, Moussorgsky, Strayhorn, Bach, Fiocco, Barber, and others. It rounded out a trio of recitals to celebrate the new organ.
Warm thanks are due to the people of St. Ann's--Fr. Lewis, Jayme and Jim, Bill Thompson--and to supportive organists from the area, including Tom White, Dean of the Sunrise AGO chapter, and Charlotte Rogers, doyenne of all organists. Thanks too to Rev. Rob Stuart for hospitality.
